Haeju Jar — Birds and Flowers in Cobalt and Copper Red

해주 항아리 — 청화와 진사로 화조를 그린 백자 항아리

A Haeju jar, fired at the kilns of Haeju in Hwanghae-do — a provincial folk-kiln porcelain of the late 19th to early 20th century, free of court formality. A generous body opens into a wide, easy mouth.

Leaves and birds are painted in cobalt blue, flowers and fruit in copper red. The brush follows its own mood rather than a pattern, and that improvisation reads today like free painting. Spirit before formality — that is the charm of Haeju ware.

The wide mouth makes it a natural vase: an armful of seasonal branches, or nothing at all — the ample body fills a room on its own. Against a white wall the blue speaks first; beside wooden furniture, the red does.
