Joseon Paulownia “Dog-Hole” Bandaji

Paulownia is light, fine-grained and resistant to worms, long prized for furniture made to hold clothes and books. This bandaji is built of that paulownia, with a small hole cut into the front panel — hence its endearing name, the "dog-hole bandaji," for a gap a puppy might slip through. Some say it vents the damp inside, others that it served as a handhold for opening the door; either way, it reveals the wit of an age that folded use and charm into a single hole. Over a face of paulownia darkened by time, hand-forged iron fittings and a round lock sit with quiet solidity, plain and sturdy at once.
Today that very hole becomes a design note. Place a small light inside and it glows out through the opening, giving the piece a face at night. As a living-room console or bedroom storage, the single hole on its composed surface gently catches the eye. Paulownia's lightness makes it easy to move on your own, so it's a pleasure to shift from spot to spot.
GOBOKII calls this bandaji "furniture that becomes a story through one hole." A thing that carries a little narrative holds a room longer than anything flawlessly smooth.
