Joseon Seotak — A Long, Low Writing Table

A seotak, a Joseon writing table. Long and low, with a second shelf below for books and writing tools, it was the furniture of reading and writing in the sarangbang, the master’s study.
It is built of clean straight lines, with arched cutouts — punghyeol — lightening the legs. The darkened finish and the marks on the top speak of long use.
In a home today it serves as a floor-level desk, a low display shelf, or a bench at the foot of a bed. Its long, low proportions never block the eye, wherever it stands.
